Image Format description
The AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a new image format designed to maximise compression efficiency, resulting in a significantly smaller file size than other image formats of equivalent or higher quality. The AVIF file format is used to store images or image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec in the HEIF container format, and it competes with HEIC, which utilises the same container format but compresses with HEVC. AVIF supports both lossless and lossy compression, animations, alpha transparency, and colour depths up to 12-bits, allowing for images with high dynamic range (HDR) and a wide colour gamut.
WebP is a new image format developed by Google that allows both lossless and lossy image compression. The goal is to provide high-quality images in smaller file sizes, which will allow the website to load faster and function more efficiently. WebP lossless images are 26% lower in size than PNGs, and lossy WebP images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images with the same SSIM quality index. Webp supports transparency in both lossless and lossy image compression and is natively supported in Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, the Opera browser, as well as numerous additional tools and software libraries.
What we do
